Can You Be Counted On?

A number of years ago I started a new position with a media group. One of my new co-workers could not be counted on…He was never available!

This became a major problem really quick. The sales team would create schedules with their clients only to have to continually push those deadlines because one person never got the job done.

We found out he was using company time, money and resources to study and do homework for his Master’s Degree!

We lost clients, our reputation and brand took a hit and company morale was in the gutter. One person was able to bring a huge company to its knees!

Can you be Counted on? Are you Available to get the job done? Will you follow through with what you said you would do? Do you do more than what is asked?

Coaches in the NFL will tell you that Availability, Being Counted on, is MORE important than skill, speed, and strength. This is SO important that players will continue to play with serious injury.

Most NFL players are driven by two things:  They know that very little separates a starter from a backup and they do not want to let their team down.

That is why they will make themselves Available at all costs even if that means playing with a broken bone or in serious pain!

Your Company, Co-workers and Clients NEED you to be Available. They need to know they can COUNT ON YOU!

To be Counted on is a product of your Attitude & Character not Skill.

The team mate that cannot be counted on is always focused on what’s best for THEM. That is why they have no problem hurting the Company, Co-Workers or Clients.

It takes the same amount of time and effort to be Counted on as it does to be a Sloth!

Can you be Counted on?
