Own or Rent?

I remember the first car we bought after getting married. It was a 1984 SAAB, and we bought it while stationed in Germany. We treated that thing like it was our baby. Every weekend, I washed and waxed it. I covered it every night with a tarp and parked it about a half mile from any other car while going grocery shopping!

We were so obsessed with owning this car that we put it on blocks the first winter to keep it from any harm! Now compare that to the time we rented a car from the airport to get around on vacation. We drove that car like it was a redheaded step child! Car dings, speedbumps and curbs were all optional accessories, and we never stressed about parking too close to anything.

There is a HUGE difference between renting something and owning something. Renting has a return policy. You use it for a short period of time, and then you indifferently return it to the one who does own it. There is no responsibility on your part to make that which you rented better. You are not invested in it, and you use it like it’s disposable.

I see this in many people with their lives. They are content driving through life as if they are renting each day. There is no concern to invest in their lives to get better because they think it is someone else’s responsibility to take care of them.

Owning is HARD. Owning means you have to be disciplined and invest in yourself. Owning calls for hard work and delayed gratification. Owning means even after everyone else gets what they want; you still might be miles away from getting what you want. Owning is being a Grown up!

Renting has no consequences. It leads to the attitude: If it doesn’t work out, I’ll just get another! Renting takes NO care for the future. Renting is SELFISH and DESTRUCTIVE to you and everyone around you.

Own your life. Invest in yourself. Get better every day. Take responsibility for who you are and what you will become. Treat your life and your mind like it is the only one you will EVER get… because it is!

ONLY YOU are responsible for your Spiritual, Relational, Mental, Physical and Financial life. Own them by investing into each area daily. The process of getting better never ends.

Be an Owner!
