Many years ago, I used to go out early Saturday mornings to “Change the World” by petitioning, debating, arguing, and holding up signs on busy street corners! These were issues I believed in very strongly, and still do, but I found that no matter how many people I engaged in conversation or debate, NOTHING EVER CHANGED!
YOU cannot Change the World UNTIL you Change YOURSELF first! No matter how great your facts, motives, passion, desire or message is, nothing will ever change until you first change YOU.
In the media today, we see many people petitioning, debating, arguing, demonstrating, holding rallies and signs to try and Change the World. It turns out that this type of petitioning does more harm than good for your cause. Pushing your ideas onto the public tends to make people want to dig their heels in even deeper to justify their own ideas. It actually does just the opposite of what you were hoping to accomplish!
If you want something to change, then it MUST start with you first. Gandhi said it this way: “Be the Change you want to see in the world.” If you are NOT willing to change first, then what you truly want is be a dictator not a leader.
A leader will always ask him or herself, what do I need to become or be to effect change? A dictator will try to force others to change through pressure (debating, arguing, petitioning, rallies and demonstrations). None of these tactics are actually wrong UNLESS you are unwilling to change FIRST!
We all want to Change the World, BUT… it is your Attitude and Motives that reveal whether you do it through Blessing or Bullying! There is a HUGE difference between the two of these.
Blessing will change the world through serving, helping and encouraging others.
Bullying will try to change the world through fear, intimidation, picketing, yelling and rioting.
Your desire to change the world is GOOD, but how you implement that desire reveals if you really want Change or Control.
Change starts with you. It accepts responsibility and works on changing your own heart.
Control starts with everyone else but you. It never looks inward and demands that everyone else is responsible to change.
Make the decision today to change the world by changing yourself FIRST!
