One of my mentors once told me, “Ed, you are an Idiot!” He was not referring to the fact that I failed at one of my businesses. He was not reproaching me because I had lost our home, retirement, and everything we had and had to sell our healthy businesses. He was also not talking about how I was afraid to talk to him or show him my financials. My mentor called me an Idiot because I was making excuses as to why I failed!
I was so busy blaming others and making excuses that I never realized the true problem…ME. My heart was full of arrogance and ignorance, which is a dangerous combination. I did not come to my senses until those words shook me out of my zombie state!
You can only truly do one or the other: Make Excuses or Make Money! If you are failing, or at least not succeeding to the extent you want, then the problem is not someone or something else. The problem is ME or in your case the problem is YOU.
What are you making excuses about right now? If you’re not sure then do one of these to find out:
- Ask your spouse or parent what you are making excuses about the most.
- Ask your boss.
- Record yourself for the next three days (This will take courage and you might not like what you hear!)
Exposing your heart is very difficult, but it is GREAT medicine for your success! We all make excuses at times but when it becomes our answer to all failures… then “Houston we have a Problem.”
The best cure for EXCUSES is to find a good mentor or two. Choose wisely because you will allow them to speak into your life. A Good Mentor will always care more about your future than your FEELINGS!
I am very grateful for the mentor who called me an IDIOT. If it wasn’t for him, I might still be broke and making excuses as to why I am failing!
Stop Making Excuses and blaming others. The problem is a whole lot closer than you think!
