In my 10th grade English class we were given a major assignment that would make up 40% of our grade. It was an oral book report. We had to read a book and then present it in front of the class as a 10 minute public speaking presentation. Knowing that if I did not do it meant failing 10th grade English and getting beaten by my Mom, I still decided to fail!
My fear of speaking out weighed my fear of failing for the year and my Drill Instructor Mom! They say public speaking is one of the top fears in the world. In my case it was true! Twenty years later a friend invited me to a Toastmaster Meeting (A group that helps people overcome their fear of public speaking). During the meeting I was asked to stand up and answer a question and to qualify you have to speak for at least one minute and no longer than two minutes. I made it 10 of the longest seconds of my life! It was so embarrassing that I did not return for 10 years!
In life we have the option to Speak or Fail. Speaking is one of the most sought after skills companies are looking for, one of the top reasons someone gets promoted, and the most important skill set needed to connect with people. Learn to speak and you can succeed at anything, avoid it and you will miss one opportunity after another!
You are not alone if you are afraid of speaking. Most of the world’s population is! There is Good News…Speaking is a SKILL that can be developed even if you are the most introverted person to ever live on the planet!
Ten years ago I went back to Toastmasters and have been there ever since. It was hard in the beginning but has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. I am still afraid of speaking but now it does not control me! In the last 10 years I have said yes to all of those opportunities that normally I would have made an excuse about. It has been a Great Adventure and one I am thrilled to be a part of.
Learn to Speak or you will Fail to reach your full potential in life. Join a Toastmasters Group in your area and start to develop this skill. I GARUANTEE it will be one of the best decisions you make also!
