This is not a misprint for the title! You might think it should read: READY, AIM. FIRE. That order works if you are a hunter, target shooter or a sniper in the military, but for the other areas of your life, the equation MUST be FIRE READY AIM.

For most of my young adult life, I “Talked” about owning a business. It was, and still is, a driving force in my life. One day, twenty years ago, I was calling on a client who owned a franchise automotive shop, and he told me that in two weeks he would shut the doors and file bankruptcy. At the time, he was advertising his shop on my radio station and wanted to cancel since he would no longer be in business.

I asked him how much he would take for the business instead of closing it since it would be better for him to at least get something for it instead of killing his credit for the next seven to ten years. He said if someone would give him $20,000, he would be able to cover enough of his debt that he could walk without filing bankruptcy.

Without hesitating, I stuck out my hand and said that I would buy the business! I was exhilarated and could not wait to get home to tell my wife the “Good” news. As I was sharing with my wife about how we just agreed to purchase our first brick and mortar business, she brought me back to reality with a couple of obvious concerns:

  1. We did not have any money nor the prospects of getting any money!
  2. We had NO experience in owning a real business!
  3. We were too young – early twenties!
  4. I did not even know how to change the oil in my car let alone do other mechanical services!
  5. We would need to find a manager to run this since I could not afford to leave my job!
  6. I did not have a clue as to how to hire, motivate and train people!

These were just a few of the concerns we had once the euphoria of owning our first business wore off. The story does have a happy ending. We came up with the money within two weeks, found a manager, worked out the details with the Franchise to help us and learned how to run a business absentee. I did not say it was easy, BUT if I used the formula of READY AIM FIRE, I guarantee we would not have purchased that business or any of the others that followed after that.

The beauty of the formula FIRE READY AIM is that you MAKE the Commitment first and amazingly everything you need to make it happen will find you!

Stop “Talking” about what you’re going to do (READY AIM FIRE) and start doing (FIRE READY AIM).
